One of the primary drivers of food waste among consumers is confusion about the date labels on food packaging. This week, Representative Chellie Pingree introduced the Food Date Labeling Act to standardize date labeling and simplify regulatory compliance. If passed, it would require manufacturers to use just two labels: ‘best if used by’ to indicate quality, and ‘expires on’ to indicate safety. It would also allow for the sale or donation of foods past their quality dates. [Civil Eats]
